POTTERY

MYLINDA WOODWARD

ARTIST BIO

My interest in pottery started three years ago when my daughter and I took an intro to hand building course thinking we could make Christmas gifts. Once the class was over, I wanted more! I discovered that I LOVE taking a lump of clay and turning it into something that is both functional and pleasing to look at.

I joined MudCity Clay and turned my basement into a pottery studio where I now spend many hours happily working on my skills. I use the slab building technique and enjoy trying new textures, stamps and glaze combinations to create visually interesting pieces.  I call my craft “Mud-tangle” because it gives me the same feeling of relaxation, creativity and well-being as the Zentangle method of drawing.

Much of my inspiration comes from other potters. I can spend hours perusing the internet looking at other artists’ work and YouTube videos, bookmarking ideas I want to try. Pottery has changed the way I see the world—I find texture and glaze possibilities everywhere I look, be it walking in the woods or shopping in a hardware store.

I grew up in a Navy family, relocating every 2 or 3 years, and from about the age of 12, one of the things that always moved with us was my mother’s kiln. Pottery was her passion and I’d like to say I shared it with her, but that was not the case. It boggles my mind to think that in all those years, not once did I ask her to show me how to make a pot!
